Dear Parishioners,
This week we celebrated the funeral for one of our long-time parishioners, Barbara Vital, the wife of Elmer. Barbara was born in Port Arthur, Texas in 1931 and joined in marriage to her beloved husband in 1956. She worked several years as a nurse at Cardinal Glennon Hospital and progressed as an industrial nurse working for Monsanto, where she worked until she retired. Please pray for the repose of her soul and for the family who is mourning this great loss.
On Wednesday, we celebrated the funeral rites for Edith Fortes, also a long-time Cathedral parishioner. Edith’s favorite pastime was sitting in her chair reading her bible or sitting on the porch watching her flowers grow while chatting with neighbors. She is survived by her two devoted daughters. I invite you to pray for the repose of her soul and for the family that mourns her loss.
In this week’s bulletin, you will find a notice for the Cathedral Men’s group, which is planning to resume meeting in person at the end of May. They will begin the evening with a Holy Hour in the main body of the Cathedral and then gather in the Boland Hall following. Masks and social distancing guidelines will be followed. If you are interested, please check the information that follows in the bulletin.
We read in our Gospel this week: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vine grower. He takes away every branch in me that does not bear fruit, and every one that does he prunes so that it bears more fruit." There is no stage in life that does not require change and corrections, that is, pruning. These cuts, at times even very painful, purify our lives and make the sap of the Lord's love run more freshly.
Perhaps some of your branches have begun to grow in the wrong direction. Or maybe your flesh has "sprouted" a branch that, if left un-pruned, would drain the strength out of your spirit and your spiritual life. It's an unholy branch that would eventually destroy your effectiveness, causing you to have no beautiful blooms and no fruit.
You don't have to be doing something wrong to be pruned. It's actually when you are doing things right that pruning takes place. So look, you are pruned if you do and pruned if you don't. You might as well deal with it and let God produce His fruit in you. But there is one sure thing: It's better to be cut back than to be cut off.

This Weekend's Pulpit Announcements
Next weekend, in honor of Mother’s Day, the Cathedral Pro-Life Ministry will be selling roses to benefit Birthright. Walk-up sales will be available at a table near the front steps of the Cathedral. Please see your bulletins for additional information.
It is with joy that the Men of the Cathedral will resume Adoration and fellowship in May, will all proper COVID guidelines in place. Please see your bulletins for additional information.
When God calls us to do His will, he leads His flock to where they are best served. We must open our hearts to His guidance and know that we can fill the entire world with God’s love by serving as one, united Church. And that service can start with a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. For more information about the ACA, please see your bulletins or call the parish office.

Wearing of Masks
Just a quick reminder that masks are to be worn at all times while in the Cathedral Basilica (except for the reception of Holy Communion). It is important that the mask covers both your nose and your mouth to prevent the spread of a virus.
